Prettiest Girl At The Fair
(© 2010 Kyf Brewer)

Once we was fancy free
Aimless and arrogant
Dancing in tatters, we,
A long time ago
Drinking our union wage
Calling our elders out
Everything in our grasp
A long time ago

But time is a hobo
With dirt on his face
You can dress him in tails
But you can't take him anywhere

Turned round and there she was
Drifting on air she was
With ribbons and braids in her hair
She was the prettiest girl at the fair

Nights on the summer sound
Castles and carnivals
Hearts broken every day
But don't let it show
And there was whiskey, babe
Carnage from drunk parades
We pulled each other through
A long time ago

But time is a scissor
That cuts you to shreds
Steals your beauty and poise
And destroys all the evidence

Turned round and there she was
Drifting on air she was
With ribbons and braids in her hair
She was the prettiest girl at the fair

Soft as the ground she tread
Thoughts tumbling through me head
Could I be her hero or chance to wed
The prettiest girl at the fair?

All the prettiest things
Will they vanish with youth
Like a flash before thunder
Or promise on paper
And leave us with demons
And dragons to slay
And we'll fight till we sleep
And I slept till you shook me alive today

But time is a doctor
With blood on his head
He can heal every bone
But he can't raise the dead for you

Turned round and there she was
Drifting on air she was
With ribbons and braids in her hair
She was the prettiest girl at the fair

Could I be her hero or chance to wed
The prettiest girl at the fair?
